Description

The charm of Paris lies in its secrets. You usually cannot imagine what hides behind a big bronze door until we help you push it open. Today we invite you to discover a real hidden gem in the very heart of Marais, a unique baroque mansion built by and for Catherine Bellier –the Sun King’s very first mistress– in the 17th century and today turned into the Administrative Appeal Court of Paris. The visit is a true privilege since the mansion is normally not open to the public.

In 1660, it is from the 1st floor balcony of the Hôtel de Beauvais that the French royal family assisted to the grand entry of Louis XIV and his young spouse Marie-Thérèse after their wedding. The Hôtel de Beauvais, in the heart of the Marais district, is nothing but architect Le Pautre’s answer to the challenge issued by Catherine Bellier, maid of Anne of Austria (mother of Louis XIV) but also the first mistress of Louis XIV: build a regular and sumptuous mansion on a narrow and deformed plot of the medieval urban fabric. With an extraordinary ingenuity and some subterfuge, the architect managed to fit in the building a splendid grand staircase, a gallery, a chapel, stables and sheds, and even a hanging garden decorated with a grotto, an aviary and a sculptured fountain, therefore materialising an exquisitely baroque scenography inspired by theatre sets.

TheWaysBeyond invites you to discover this prestigious mansion once abandoned for years and that now hosts the Administrative Appeal Court of Paris. The visit will open you the doors to places usually closed to the public, such as the courtyard, the elliptical staircase leading to the chapel or the gothic cellar that the Abbey of Chaâlis used to own under their Paris mansion (formerly build on the same plot). The visit will end with an informal drink in a bar nearby.
